The Salt Granary of Pérouges
1536 - 1790
This residence has retained the name of its former function.
Indeed, salt was stored in a “salt storehouse” where the population could obtain this essential commodity, notably used for preserving food.
For several centuries, salt could only be purchased from the royal and seigneurial authorities who held the monopoly, leading to the development of a significant smuggling trade. The salt tax, known as the gabelle, was considered a highly unpopular indirect tax before being abolished by the French Revolution. The Pérouges salt storehouse operated from 1536 to 1790.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Salt Granary?
Built in the 15th century, this place was used to store and control the precious commodity that was salt — a rare good, heavily taxed by the “gabelle”.
Salt was wealth, food preservation, and therefore life. Pérouges, a city of merchants and artisans, traded in it, and the Salt Granary was then an obligatory passage for the inhabitants: a place for meeting, exchanges, and negotiation.
Today restored with respect and exacting standards, the Salt Granary remains a living witness to the past of Pérouges, classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France.
Each stone, each beam still bears the imprint of time, of the hands and voices that have shaped its history.
We invite you to savor this part of the ancient soul, to feel its tranquility and strength.
